The relationship to her children was strained; perhaps because she had never learned any mothering skills from her own mother. When Jane’s mother died, her children managed to get a hold of Jane’s inheritance without leaving a penny of it for her. Jane is one of the women who volunteered her story for this book. Her children had been in counseling and Jane also participated in therapy for herself in addition to being involved in AA. In her 40s she briefly returned to college. She has carved out a place for herself but it is not an independent place.

She was not a vindictive person, and blaming her parents now would not help her mature in her emotional responses; it would only impair her current relationship with them. Then she recognized that her anger was aimed at herself and at Bob. She was angry with him because he did not encourage her to consider her own needs. He did not support her in attempts to find her own gratification, to develop interests and activities that would lead to increased self-confidence. Bob not only refused to participate in her therapy sessions, but he resented the time and money spent on these sessions.

After some initial times of compliance with his wishes, Helen fought her husband’s forceful advances off when she felt too tired. George took his wounded pride and hurt feelings to other, more willing young women in the community. When one of the women reported that she was pregnant by Helen’s husband, Helen initiated divorce proceedings. The divorce swallowed whatever savings Helen had. She was barely able to keep her little house for herself. As she bitterly complained, she came out of the marriage much poorer than she had entered it.
